Have you ever said—”Ah look at that beautiful brown donkey in the field” – stop the car and see how easy it is to get him/her to come to be rubbed by you – ears pricked and see his body shiver as you pat him on the head and feel those huge big long ears !
There is something magical about this wonderful friendly member of the equine animal world. They come in all colours and sizes—they have a lovely bray when they want to say hallo to you ! They are a very sociable animal and make great pets and if well looked after, can live up to 40 years and are easy to care for.
At the end of World War 1, there were c. 280,000 working donkeys in Ireland—today, there are about 7,000 in the south of Ireland and about 3,000 in the North – only 10,000 left on this Island !
If YOU don’t do something about it now, they could be EXTINCT in Ireland in the next 50 years, other than a few in Dublin, Fota Island and Belfast Zoos.
